GDPR and the small business

GDPR means putting in place processes which protect personal data; that is data from which an individual living person could be identified. Some is more obvious (such as name and contact details) and some, such as IP addresses, less so. As a business you need to be clear about

•          What data you hold

•          How and when was/is it obtained

•          Where and how it is held

•          What data you need to keep because you still need to use, access and process it

You also need to be able to prove, particularly if you are formally asked to do so (for example by the Information Commissioner’s Office who will have extended powers including imposing larger fines and ability to commence prosecution. New Criminal offences are to be introduced before May) how you comply and meet your data protection obligations.
The best way to do this is to have documents in place which explain what you data you have, how you protect it and what “evidence” you have to prove that you do what you say.
Our consultancy programme contains all the help and documents which you need to achieve GDPR compliance in a small business. We understand that for some businesses you need a hand holding service to make sure you are on the right path.
